CBSE English Question Bank 2021 - 'Poets and Pancakes' Answers

 1. What kind of effect does Asokamitran’s style of writing have on the reader?
Answer: Asokamitran's style of writing is satirical and informal, with humour interspersed amongst the text. This allows the reader to feel at ease, and helps in identifying the common human traits and flaws in the various people working in Gemini studios.

2. Discuss the significance of the make-up room in the chapter, ‘Poets and Pancakes’.
Answer: The maleup room of the Gemini studio is the central crux of the story. It is the setting which takes us towards the superficiality of the people in life and of the people at the studio. It also showed us an intermingling of people from different cultures, and how a stricht hierarchical structure is maintained. Finally, it shows us that the film industry places heavy importance on looks and vanit on screen, and not in person, as understood when Asokamitran comments on how the makeup looks hideous in person, but good on the screen.

3. ‘In all instances of frustration, you will always find the anger directed towards a single person openly or covertly...’
Do you think it is right to direct our anger towards someone who is not responsible for the cause of anger? Justify.
Answer: No, I do not find it justified to direct my anger at someone who is not responsible for the cause of the anger. This creates unnecessary squabbles amongst people. It also shows that the person who does so simply needs someone to blame, regardless of who it is. It indicates that they are ill-tempered and juvenile.

4. The people left in ‘utter bafflement’ after the English poet’s speech. Mention two things the speaker could have kept in mind before addressing an audience to avoid such a reaction. Give your rationale for it.
Answer: The speakers should have remembered that his audience were not native English speakers, and thus would be left rather confused while trying to understand his heavily accented English. He should have also remembered that the audience may be unaware of who he is (as indicated by the Boss's long speech that barely introduced him), and should've established his identity before beginning.
